Manna Catering of New York City may be the only kosher caterer who refuses to cook the traditional Jewish 'k' foods - kugel, knishes, kreplach and kasha. Lenchner sees these dishes as family fare for the holidays, not fancy foods for kosher events. I love cholent and tcimmes but they do not present well, he says. And for the new brand of jewish chefs, presentation is almost as important as taste.

We had Manna cater our wedding this year. The food is delicious, without a doubt. However, they are really only good at making the food and there is a lot more that's needed from a good caterer. They are enormously disorganized, easily overwhelmed, and spoke inappropriately to us on a few times in a fit of stress. They forget to send invoices, can't handle multiple emails a week from clients, and respond selectively to questions, sometimes choosing to only respond to those that are to their benefit.
Which of course leads to more emails, which leads to them being even more overwhelmed - a nasty cycle. Our problems spawned, we think, from a miscommunication at the start. We asked if Manna could offer us event planning services with the catering as we live on the opposite side of the country from our wedding, and they assured us that they could. However, as the date neared, it became clear that they viewed any questions about logistics or coordination as bothersome distractions. We were hardly a terrifying wedding couple - we had three of our other vendors tell us we were the best wedding they'd ever worked.
