J Z Cool Eatery & Catering Late for the Train (1979 - 2004) and Flea Street (1980 - Present) have come to exemplify farm-to-table, New American cuisine in the Bay Area and beyond. Flea Street has been a Silicon Valley favorite since 1980. The atmosphere is contemporary, sophisticated and inviting. The menu is a celebration of the rich Northern California food community. Seafood is caught in the nearby Pacific, produce is carefully sourced from local farms, meat is grass-fed or pasture-raised and nearly all ingredients are organic, clean and safe.
Services
Starting the month of June, Flea Street now will only offer a Prix-fixe menu at $75 per person. It will offer three courses with options for most dietary restriction. Credit cards are required to hold reservations, you will not be charged unless your guest count drops or you do not show up for your reservation.

It's fine. I wouldn't go back. I had the halibut which was a special for the day. It was incredibly overdone, like a well done steak. The food doesn't match the price. Very expensive and the quality just isn't there.

I think this place is just okay, especially given the prices. TL;DR version: baked goods and desserts fantastic, food is okay - flavors tend to dissipate too quickly. What i ordered: - baby artichoke salad - fried oyster mushrooms - cornmeal scallops - toffee butter cake - martins donuts The bread to start was AMAZING. Homemade biscuits and rye bread, with delicious butter and strawberry jam.

Baby artichoke salad was refreshing, but lacking flavor in my opinion. Mushroom fritters were seasoned well and pretty tasty, but the dip lacked significant flavor. Cornmeal scallops on the first bite were super tasty, but then the flavor dissipated rapidly. Both desserts were super yummy!

Absolutely fantastic! I've worked with Culinary Agents since right after their inception. During COVID, they were, by far, one of the most considerate and kind vendors. We will remain loyal to them, because they chose to take care of the restaurants with which they worked. We recently switched to using them exclusively for job postings and our team is thrilled with the platform.

I've eaten at Flea Street many times over the 30 years I've lived in the Bay Area. I ate there last night for the first time since 2020. A disappointment to say the least. My friends and I all had delicious appetizers, then for entrees I had the Petrale sole. The fish portion measured approximately 4" x 2" Come on really? Though nicely presented, the piece of fish was minuscule and priced in the mid-$30s.

My two of my friends shared the whole chicken entree for two, outside nice and crispy, inside DRY at $70. You can only charge these prices if your food is excellent. Then the best part.the restaurant adds 20% gratuity (stating it's included), which is fine with me, but then adds a line for you to add more. Give me a break! Mediocre food at a high price point. Service was good and presentation lovely, but that's not the only thing I'm paying for.

What a disappointing evening. We went to Flea Street for our 25th Anniversary dinner and were anticipating a wonderful dining experience. We were disappointed. We started out with the Crispy Fried Oyster Mushrooms and the Braised Cabbage Roll. Both were beautifully presented but the accompanying sauces overwhelmed the dish. If the Cabbage roll had raisins or pork in it, it wasn't something we could find.

We continued with the Local Black Cod and the Marin Sun Farm Pork Chop. The Cod was a wonderful main course that demonstrated the quality of what we expected. The Pork Chop was tasteless and the accompanying heirloom beans were undercooked. (Our waiter did take it off of our bill.) We were pleased with the Toffee Butter Cake desert, so at least the meal ended on a high point. I've been going to the restaurant for about 30 years, and often hosted groups of international executives from around the world.

In the past it had a much wider menu variety, with incredible daily specials featuring organic and local foods, and the chefs were always willing to customize the entrees and thoroughly impress the guests to the point that they remembered the dining experience for years. The restaurant now states "we politely decline all modifications of substitutions" on its menu. This is a far cry from the Flea Street Cafe I so much loved.

I think the first time I went to Flea Street was with my parents when I was in high school, so maybe 1983? It's been a favorite of mine ever since. I've gone with family and friends throughout the years, celebrating this or that. Or not celebrating anything at all. I have to say that my favorite way to dine there is with my husband at the bar. Eloy is always there with his soft, friendly chuckle serving up fantastic cocktails. Jesse is consistently vibrant and eagerly greeting guests as they dine. Organic, in-season, local, fresh, loyal, dedicated and created with love - delish!

This past visit we had The Local Seafood Cioppino (black cod | clams | mussels | dungeness crab | prawns | fennel | saffron aioli | charred bread), the Local Dungeness Crab Cake (frisee | fava blossoms | lemon caper aioli), the Kampachi Crudo (koji vinaigrette | shiso oil | blood orange | fennel), and Half Dozen Local Oysters (fermented cabbage | chili oil | togarashi).

And of course I had to get my favorite cocktail in the bay area, a Lavender Lemon Drop (blue ice organic vodka | lavender | lemon | cointreau | agave). Bob got his favorite, Hangar One Vodka Martini with olives. Can't wait until next time. Spring is the best as we just walk from our house! Ahhh how I love local!

Ok I don't usually keep re-reviewing places I've been to multiple times, but I just need to make another plug for Flea Street. As things open up, so many restaurants have gotten rid of their outdoor dining, but Flea Street has maintained their beautiful outdoor setup. It was a cold and rainy night, and their patio/deck roof is completely water tight, and they have these amazing heat lamps that are right over your table, so I was surprisingly warm and comfortable!

Of course, Jesse made a personal appearance to say hello and chat, which is always really nice. Highlights off the menu tonight: - Crispy fried oyster mushrooms: perfectly seasoned and just the right amount of breading, really highlights the mushrooms - Mushroom carbonara: generous on the mushrooms, served with fresh pasta and a runny egg yolk. This was a rich and hearty dish even though it was vegetarian - Cioppino: wonderfully intense seafood flavors and perfectly cooked seafood The scallops, short rib, and pork chop were also solid.

All servers are masked, and proof of vaccination is required for both indoor and outdoor dining. Again, I just had to review again to point out how great their outdoor setup is, even in the middle of winter when outdoor dining is otherwise very unappealing at most other places. Please support Flea Street!

The chef here is amazing, whoever it is. Thank you. One of the best meals I've had in a long time. The place is a little overly covid-concious, but it is appreciated. Drinks are amazing, bartender "Eloy" seemed very personable. Thanks!

Not the best experience. The food was decent, though certainly not worth the price. I really wanted to like the seasonal, local fare - but left not particularly satisfied. Also, having food (including the soup) served merely warm was a let-down. The service was very nice, though. On a cold evening the draft in the outdoor dining area is pretty bad; with just a small heat lamp overhead we kept the parkas on and left with frigid toes.

After a disastrous dinner experience in RH rooftop in Marin, I'm back to civility and excellence tonight. We party of three were greeted warmly at the door. They did ask for proof of vaccine and ID but everything went well without incident. We did tried some cocktails and kicked start the dinner with some figure foods. Crab cake, brussel sprout and some spinach salad.all good.

For main, my friends had the short ribs and they loved it. My black cod is a excellent dish. Fresh fish with some magical pumpkin puree and the crispy.thingie on top make a prefect dish! Not really sure what they are but they are good contrast to the tender white meat. Job well done! Also want to thank Miguel for the jokes.lol

The bread was delicious. We had wine by the glass but they had a nice selection rather than only a few wines to chose from. I had smoked trout as an appetizer which was served on a strange concoction of bland potatoes and hard boiled eggs pressed in a circle. I did not care for the texture of the "crushed potatoes" but the fish was good. My sister had honey squash soup which she enjoyed but I felt it was very sweet.

The Cauliflower Agnolotti was mild, light but good and my table mate had Chicken which she enjoyed. I personally thought the gnocchi accompaniment was on the heavy side but had good flavor. Sauces were the stars of the dishes.

The ambiance is great, staff is attentive and food is good. Nice place for a business dinner or a date night close to home. Menu has its ups and downs but I always find a couple of excellent things in the meal. They have gotten a bit convoluted with some of the dishes in more recent years - would avoid those that have too many ingredients.

Cozy space, but the meal itself was seriously lacking. The bread/starter plate was a nice thought, but the bread was dry, the biscuits were soggy, and the bok choy chips were not crispy. For my main, I ordered a modified version of the Black Cod dish. The vegetables I received were dripping with oil and lacked flavor or basic seasoning. I'll excuse the lack of flavor since I was unable to try the uni butter, kombu dashi broth, or other accompaniments that typically come with the dish. However, the only flavor that was coming through was an unappetizing fishy taste.

The piece of fish was tiny and most of its mass was the skin. My fellow dinner guests ordered the short ribs and the chicken pot pie. They gave the short ribs a hesitant 4/5. On the other hand, the pot pie was a 1/5. "A grocery store pot pie would have been better." This dish was a confusing attempt at fusion. a side of bland bok choy was paired with the lackluster, soupy pot pie.

Service was mediocre -- our waiter was helpful in checking with the kitchen about which dishes could be prepared sans garlic due to my allergy, but she forgot about my hot water. The dishes are pricey, and, unfortunately, the quality does not justify these prices. We left the restaurant unimpressed and all agreed that we will not return. I left still hungry, and the bowl of oatmeal I had once at home was far better (and more cost-effective) than my meal here at Flea Street. It now makes sense to me why we were able to get a last-minute reservation here on one of the busiest nights of the year for dining out.

I've been coming here for about a decade and they are better now than ever. Every single plate was absolutely perfect and delicious. We had smoked trout, sardines, spinach salad, persimmon salad, short ribs, chicken pot pie, scallops, and three desserts along with cocktails and wine. YES we darn well tried everything on the menu. We did not leave a single bite of food on any plate!

The service is impeccable and it's nice to be back inside. Flea St. is more than just a neighborhood gem, it is a true culinary powerhouse up there with Chez Panisse and Village Pub.

Modern American food. We went here after a friend recommendation and this place is so totally worth it. I had the goat cheese and beet salad with prosciutto chips that was creamy, crunchy yet sweet and earthy. The fried sardines reminded me of hot egg rolls with a crunchy fish in the middle. We ordered the braised short ribs that were sublime, cooked to perfection but not dried out not swimming in too much juice.

I tried the vegetarian tasting menu but then all the rest of the good food caught up to me and I couldn't finish it. Oh well save it from breakfast. Ambience is warm. With muted lighting and bright lights on the stair steps so patrons don't stumble. Even the owner Jessie Cool was here tonight - a gracious warm lady. Service is very good and shout out to our waiter Miguel who reminded me of Dani Rojas in Ted Lasso! Same energy and sweetness!

This has been one of my peninsula favorites for a long time. No longer in the area we decided to go when we were up by the bay and hadn't been since before Covid. The friends we went with told us they'd been using paper plates; luckily that was no longer the case. It was a beautiful night and outdoor dining was perfect for a warm fall evening.

We were put off by vaccine checks which are ridiculous, especially for outdoor dining. We also didn't think self-busing made any sense at all. Their 'rationale' - they don't want staff hovering. My rationale is they don't want to incur the necessary costs for wait staff or deal with being short-handed. They also have a covid 'manifesto' on the dining table for all to read, ending with a 'fill in the blank' where they write in what time you're supposed to leave.

And for this they include the tip which for a party of 4 is unacceptable. If I wanted to bus my own dishes I'd stay home and forcing a tip in this day and age makes no sense. We would have paid 20% anyway. So they are a little extreme on the covid front and it's frankly silly especially for outdoor dining. That aside the food was OK. Not as great as I remember but I won't quibble.

It was a decent meal - short ribs their usual deliciousness, salads fresh and wholesome. The warm biscuits to die for. Decent cocktails and no more 'mini' glasses which is nice. Dessert was yummy. They need to be a little less extreme and focus back on the food. It's good but it's not great and this was a place that used to be bullet-proof.

I get it's hard to run a restaurant these last two years. The owner has always been ahead of her time and serving wonderful cuisine. I just missed their typical warm hospitality. They seemed more focused on covid prevention than a great experience in all facets of the evening. It's a nice evening on the peninsula but next time in town I'll go to Village Pub, Try Selby's or hit Los Altos Grill. They are a lot less militant in their approach and we don't have to bus our own dishes or have our tip automatically put on the bill.

Still our favorite place to dine on the Peninsula. Flea Street never fails when it comes to a menu with seasonal, local and always exquisitely prepared dishes and staff that are always there to serve you just at the right time and acoustics that make it possible to have conversation. It's like goldilocks finding everything just right! We have been dining outside over the last year at Flea Street and this week we dined inside (proof of vaccination required), safely and socially distanced from other tables.

I was reminded that Flea Street hits the note on everything that makes a dinner out for us extra special. We were a group of 5 and as soon as we were seated our server came over to ask if we would like to order drinks. She answered questions on the cocktails and helped 2 of us get just the right glass of wine to start, a fantastic dry French Rose.

That was soon followed up with the plate of scrumptious house-made buttermilk biscuits, that are small enough to not feel guilty about devouring and the 'taste of the season' small platter of local vegetables, enough for each guests to have a couple bites. A perfect start. We ordered the smoked trout which is served on top a bed of radish, avocado and jicama alongside delectable potato chips that serve as the perfect way to scoop up a bite.

We also ordered the roasted Brussels sprouts which looks like a dish almost too beautiful to eat and then you take a bite and find out it's even more delicious than it looks. The Brussels are perfectly roasted and served in a bowl with roasted mashed pumpkin and chunks of sweet parsnip, manchego cheese and plenty of pomegranate seeds. YUM! For our mains we ordered the Which Came First, crispy rounds of chicken with perfectly roasted veggies, poached egg and a pitcher of melt in your mouth gravy to coat it all; The Vegetarian Tasting, best described as 4 different mini-courses of vegetarian heaven served on one plate- the highlight likely the chive gnocchi with pumpkin; Wild Prawn Pasta which are these giant perfectly cooked prawns served on top of house made fettuccine in a bowl of white wine, butter, garlic and green onion; Wild Mushroom Risotto, creamy, intense, and covered in fresh herbs- divine!

Of course we had dessert- 3 of them! Pumpkin cheesecake, an Espresso Martini and Carrot cake layered with cream cheese icing. All just out of this world. Everything you want in a dinner out with friends. I love that every time we go to Flea Street there is something different to try on the menu and even the tried and true dishes, like Which Came First, somehow get more delicious with the years.

We enjoyed attentive service and love not being hovered over but someone there just when you need them. Loved dining indoors in the newly remodeled, more open and airy dining room. And the current exhibit of art alone is worth the visit!

TLDR Ideal Order: (App) Toast of the Moment - Which Came First (Chicken) - (Dessert) S'mores Tart Day 8/12/21 ~7:30. Reservations. No wait. Scoring Weight: 90% Food, 10% Other Worth a visit? Yes. If you order the right thing. Food: (2.5/5) Fresh Bread/Biscuits w/house-grown Veggies: Just okay. Average piece of sourdough. Small soft biscuits. Not enough butter. Veggies were small but fresh.

Not quite Farmer's Market level. (4.5/5) Toast of the Moment: GOOD. Very crunchy and butter toast base. Thick & rich Ricotta. High quality Salami to offset the incredible sweet nectarines. The fresh fruit really brought it home. Great balance. Worth the $24. (4.5/5) Which Came First? (Chicken Entree): GOOD. Probably the best dish on the menu.

Huge tender pieces of chicken coated in a very crispy mochiko-style breading. Very buttery and rich vegetable mix with a soft egg yolk for even more decadence. Lemon sauce provided enough acidity to cut the fat. Just solid all around. Would recommend. (3.5/5) Marin Sun Farms Slow Braised Short Ribs: Okay. Standard short ribs in a mostly sweet terikayi-like sauce.

Very standard. Came on a crispy potato hasbrown-like starch. Was a little under seasoned. A safe play. (4.1/5): S'mores Tart: GOOD. Incredibly rich/dense chocolate truffle base. Very salty graham cracker crust. Toasted marshmallows + a strong berry-based reduction. The sauce actually tasted like their base fruits. More than enough dessert for 2 people. Shared between 4 since it was so rich. (3.7/5) Mo's Peach Cobbler: Alright.

Closer to peaches + cake + ice cream. Didn't really have a cobbler/pie crust. Not overly sweet. Best part was the vanilla ice cream. Not nearly as heavy as the S'mores tart but got the job done (2.5/5) Veggie Platter: SKIP. Eggplant tortellini had a nice al dente cook. Not too much flavor. Potato pancake + red sauce + chili pepper could have used more seasoning.

The red pepper sauce looked tasty but was underwhelming. Vegetable mix was fine. Just standard roasted carrots & asparagus in butter. Tomato olive bruschetta + smoked mozzarella. Best thing on the platter. Didn't miss the meat at all. Would have preferred 4 servings of this. Not worth $40. Maybe the worst entree on the menu. Worth the price if you come in with the right expectations and order the right thing. Other: * Service was a bit slow. Time between finishing the dessert & signing the check took ~45 minutes. * Gender neutral bathrooms * Private parking lot. * 20% tip automatically included

The prices here have become exploitative while the service has plummeted. Wine markup is worse than I have seen even at extremely prestigious, Michelin starred institutions that can charge whatever they want. A $40 vegetarian sampler plate is priced as something very special. Well, it included a piece of toast with a slice of cheese melted on top and three other completely unmemorable sides. Tapioca for dessert runs you $14. $14 tapioca!

And then there is the service. They automatically charge you 20% gratuity for grossly substandard service. One of the best strengths of Flea Street used to be the wonderful, professional servers. No longer. Expect to be abandoned at your table for long stretches and expect basic service concepts like offering to take a wine order before entrees come out to be out of the question.

We should all strive to be sympathetic to restaurants having legitimate struggles during these difficult times. But in this case, with the huge drop in quality of food and service on top of the crazy price hikes, I sadly won't be coming back to Flea Street.

Flea Street has always been one of my peninsula favorites. They've expanded their outdoor setup post COVID and now even have a bar/drinking area (no food served). Tables are nicely spaced out, are well shaded from the sun, and they have heat lamps for when it gets cold. Of note: they do have dine in service (proof of vaccination required). I appreciate that they're taking all the precautions to protect their staff and customers! I've always enjoyed their cocktails, which often feature seasonal ingredients.

The drinks are generously sized and well balanced. We had a bottle of wine, but I got the Smoke, which had just the right amount of spiciness to it. For food, my favorites for the summer that I always get: - Fried squash blossoms: it's surprisingly hard to find this dish elsewhere, and it's something I would never make at home. Definitely a dish for dining there rather than takeout - Fried green tomatoes: another dish that's rarely made this well elsewhere - Panzanella: they do a great job with their bread, and the tomatoes were so sweet For mains, I've never been disappointed with any dish, but my go-to is the vegetarian tasting even though I'm not vegetarian.

The other night, we got the short ribs, which were perfectly cooked and came with a nice warm beat salad and potatoes. Servers checked in frequently, and they now have a different service model where both the front and back of house may be coming to your table. As a result, the 20% gratuity is split evenly among all the staff. I appreciate the small touches like the seasonal vegetables and bread to start and the small sweet bite to finish. They're still doing takeout (including cocktails to go!), so please support Flea Street. Highlight of the evening: we were about to refill our wine glasses, and Jesse Cool herself came by the table to help us and chat with us!

We ate here twice in the past month. The food is always fresh, delicious and beautifully plated. They constantly change their dish based on what is seasonal, so you get to taste something different every time. Their new outdoor dining area is lovely, and I like how they setup their outdoor bar area as a barn, very creative.

I've loved Flea Street for years. Their dining room has always been quaint and the food always fresh and delicious. With Covid hitting, I imagine that it takes a tribe to serve their meals to the public via take out. We tried it on a whim one night because we were craving a "date night". Ordering was easy and online. We arranged a pick-up time, drove up, popped the trunk and they came out with our order and placed it in the trunk.

The meal itself was phenomenal. Just like dining in the restaurant. Their compostableware was made perfect for all of the sides and main to be served. They utilized each slot so well. We even got the cocktails and it was delish! We'd love to visit if they ever do outdoor dining. For now, we will continue to support them through this!

If we didn't love Flea Street enough already. Not sure if you heard. It's like the end of the world out there. Kidding. Sort of. We stocked up on food and holy moly who I am with this cooking thing? Been over a week of cooking every meal for me and my family of four. WHO AM I? But we have been reading about all of these people losing their jobs and our beloved restaurants having to close their doors only a week after the shelter in place mandate so we thought we would start supporting our local businesses and ordering out.

I emailed Flea Street yesterday morning to place an order for my husband and I. Got a call later in the afternoon and decided to throw in two pieces of their insane carrot cake because YOLO. The guy on the phone told me that because of the local community they were able to hire back a lot of their kitchen staff and were hoping to be able to hire back front of the house folks too.

We were told to arrive at 7 for our order pick up. My husband went while I was doing the bedtime routine with the toddlers. He told me that everyone was keeping their 6+ feet distance from each other and waiting for their food to come out. After I took everything out of the bag I noticed the carrot cakes were missing. I called the restaurant and they apologized and offered to drop it off at our front door.

They came 5 minutes later, rang our doorbell and left. If this isn't customer service I don't know what is?! Not to mention our dinner came with handmade hand sanitizer! We were already - but customers for LIFE.

Every once in a while, I realize that I haven't Yelped a place that I've eaten at MANY times. In the case of Flea Street, I hadn't even checked in during the twenty-plus years I've been going. Apologies, Jesse. My summary: This is a consistently very good restaurant. I can't remember ever having a bad dish here, let alone a bad meal.

In fact, almost every dish I've had has been excellent. The buttermilk biscuits are crave worthy. Luckily you can buy a dozen to take home. The short ribs come with brussels sprouts, bacon, and beets -- AND horseradish creme fraiche. Yes, please. On the current Winter menu, there's the amusingly named Which Came First which has not just chicken and beet-pickled egg but bacon and blue cheese. It's been the standout fav of those I've gone with recently.

The Beet Napoleon appetizer was an unexpected pleasant surprise and is a great representation of what Flea Street is all about. Beautiful presentation, complex pleasing flavors, and a generous portion. Definitely get this again. On a recent visit, I was in a fish mood so got the Mussel Stew as a starter and Pacific Coast Catch as a main. The stew was outstanding -- the Pernod added just the right odor and flavor.

For an appetizer, it was a large number of mussels. The flavors didn't stand out as much on the main dish. Still a good dish but not remarkable. If you have room for dessert (and I rarely do), the carrot cake and turtle brownie are decadent. The cheese plate has a solid selection and well-sized portion. There's also Tin Pot ice cream. There's an extensive Menlo Park-priced wine list. Example: Flowers Pinot is $117.

On the cocktail list, the Lemon Drop and Manhattan are both very good. Service is always friendly -- many make a point of trying to learn your name. I won't be long before I come back.

To say that Culinary Agents is user friendly is an understatement. They make the job search navigable by adding a level of convenience, clarity and transparency to the process. They are simply unmatched as a networking tool and job matching platform for the service and hospitality sectors. It's unsurprising that the restaurants and businesses they work with are of the same caliber.

From the interactions I've had with members of their staff, to the effectiveness of the services they provide, nothing I've experienced with this company has been less than stellar.
