I Procrastinated on ordering my daughters bday cake and it was the first home college football game of the season so everywhere was booked up. I called hot cakes and and they quickly got a cake order placed for me to have picked up the following day. when I say this was the best cake I've ever had I'm not exaggerating the salted caramel chocolate cake is to die for.

I absolutely love hotcakes! The chai tea lattes are great, my boyfriend says the iced matchas are the best in town. As for food, some of my favorites are the polenta cakes, the ham and corn chowder, the corn fritters, the broccoli salad and don't forget to grab some of the holiday tetrazzini when it gets close to Christmas! As for the bakery and desserts, I love their Napoleon and their pumpkin muffins, but their chocolate waterfall cake is always my go to and never disappoints. You can't go wrong at hotcakes!

I had a good experience here and would recommend it for others. I'm a big fan of a well-done pastry - which it's hard to find a flaky, light, flavorful pastry done right. I had a Napoleon from here and it was very good. The glaze on top was not overpowering, and the pastry itself was flaky and delicious. It was difficult to put your fork through it, but the cream filling was done just right, and very generously.
I also got their chocolate croissant which I recommend as well - it was one of the best ones I've had in a while ($4.99) (ask for it warmed!) I also got a latte, which could have been improved by getting more of the coffee/espresso flavor in there. It was overpowered by the milk, which is a pet peeve of mine. But they do have unique flavors like amaretto, Irish cream, and classic flavors like caramel and iced coffee. They also have (deliciously creamy) oat milk as a non-dairy option as well.

Quite disappointed. Arrived at 4:15p. Upon arrival chairs to the left of the counter were flipped. I asked if they were closing and they said they closed at 6pm. I ordered a cold brew, yummy, and a Mexican Chocolate Cupcake, dry and not very amazing and lack of the chipotle spice. I sat down and waited for my order. I received a cupcake in a inverted plastic cup and my cold brew.
I guess I was suppose to leave? I sat down in the area not closed down. At 4:30p, the wait staff started to wrap food up in cooler. Several other patrons walk in after me and ordered more than just a treat and a drink. At 4:45p employees started to bring in the outside chairs VERY LOUDLY and sweeping the floors. I have huge distaste for any business stating they are open until 6pm and they start cleaning prior to the closing time stated.
It feels rude and rushed. Employees were not overly pleasant. I get it, post COVID, finding employees is hard. But maybe you teach them to wait until customers have completed their items or inform your patrons that you are closing and will be starting clean up. I felt when I entered at 4:15pm, a good hour and fourth five minutes prior to closing I would be able to sit and enjoy my treat. Silly me.

I've been meaning to try HotCakes for a while and finally made it a priority in my search for the best matcha latte in Charlottesville. Now I'm kicking myself for taking so long to get there. Is this what you'd call a hidden gem or do the locals already know what's up?! I feel like someone has been keeping this place a secret from me and now I'll have to make up for all the time I've missed going here.
It was about 30 minutes before closing when I went in, so I really only planned to get a drink and maybe one sweet treat. I hate making employees prepare food when they're in the mode to start breaking stuff down and cleaning up. I immediately noticed how clean the space was as soon as I walked through the front door. There were a few people dining in and they were all spaced pretty far apart.
They definitely have their Covid practices locked down! I was greeted by both employees right away and even though they were properly masked up, I could feel their smiles behind the masks. Winning, so far. I read online that they offer organic matcha, but I didn't see it on the menu board. I was ready with a backup plan if they didn't have it, but luck was on my side and I ordered a large matcha latte with oat milk.
I couldn't pass up the opportunity to order a few prepared items from the display case as well; everything looked so daggone good. Here's what I left with: hot matcha latte with oat milk, marinated fresh mozzarella (single portion), Eloise cupcake, tiramisu and holiday tetrazzini. I highly recommend every single thing I ordered. The matcha is QUALITY.
It's slightly sweetened with vanilla, but not overly so. I might try it unsweetened next time. I'll definitely be trying it iced as well. I haven't stopped craving that mozzarella since the minute I took the last bite. I could eat that as a side dish or app every day. It wasn't overly oily like some marinated mozz can be. The flavor was herbaceous, but light enough to not be overwhelming and the tomatoes were A++!
The holiday tetrazzini, chosen by my other half and mostly consumed by him, was pure comfort! They offered to heat it up for us, but we had some errands to run and waited until we got back. I'm sure you could put it in the oven or in a saucepan, but we zapped it in the microwave since we were staying in a hotel room and it was DELICIOUS! Super creamy, cheesy and the meat was very tender and flavorful.
He's been talking about it nonstop since he had it. The Eloise cupcake is so elegant. It was almost too pretty to eat. ALMOST. Gah! It tastes just as amazing as it appears. The cupcake is moist and has a creamy center and the icing is so light. It's not sickly sweet, which means I ate it ALL. Sometimes there's a pile of icing leftover when I'm done with a cupcake.
Not this time. These would make a lovely gift for someone or great for a party when Covid is over. They're beautiful and oh-so-tasty! Last, but definitely not least is that tiramisu. If this is one of your favorite desserts like it is mine, run to Hot Cakes Gourmet and get a slice! OMG. It is everything I want in tiramisu. You can tell the espresso they use for the ladyfingers is quality.
That flavor was spot on. The layers should've been a hint to me that it's much bigger than it appears when you start eating it. Two of us shared a piece and there was a tiny smidge leftover for breakfast the next morning. If I hadn't gobbled up that cupcake first, the tiramisu definitely would've been demolished. If you're like me and you've passed by HotCakes, but you haven't stopped in yet - it's time to give 'em a try!
You can even order ahead for pickup or delivery through their website. I'll be going back very soon to try some of those yummy looking sandwiches, salads, and of course more sweet treats.

We ordered our wedding cake from HotCakes for our microwedding this October. I was a little worried about ordering it, since we weren't able to taste beforehand and correspond via email only. But I had absolutely nothing to worry about! Lisa works magic, paid close attention to detail, and not only was it beautifully decorated, it tasted AMAZING! We ordered a two chocolate-raspberry and everyone was praising how great it was.
You could taste the real raspberries in the filling, and the cake itself was light and decadent. I was thoroughly impressed with how delicious and how beautiful it turned out - better than I had even imagined! Huge thank you to Lisa and her team. 5/5, easy!

After coming here for years, I can say I've never seen a place as unique as HotCakes! I'd have to describe it as a blend of a bakery/cafe/catering with a large display of prepared food to go. Great place to sit down with a cup of coffee and get some work done. Did I mention they have the most delicious, year-round pumpkin muffins in town? Not to mention the friendliest staff ever.

9/26/20: I loved having another great, piping hot breakfast burrito this morning. Ingredients include chorizo, black beans, & scrambled eggs. It was still hot when I got home after making another stop! I recommend it highly (& like to add hot sauce at home). I also got a container of their famous cold sesame noodles for later. They've been a favorite for years!
I don't know of better quiche in Charlottesville. Apple cake is among their many other superb treats. One can't go wrong with anything there. Update: I took out lunch today. Given the blazing heat, they were both chilled & each was excellent. I highly recommend their superb sesame noodles & their delicious seaweed salad. (Please confirm it, but they *may* have the added benefit of being vegetarian too.) Each was a cool, delicious treat (& they're also longtime favorites. If it last ms that long, I'll have a slice of their great apple cake tonig

As a 2020 couple, we had to reschedule our April wedding for September, and we pulled it off last weekend with the wonderful HotCakes catering team. Not only was Lisa completely understanding and able to accommodate the new date, but she also made the food and service the best we've experienced in the industry. With Lisa at the helm, and Mich (HotCakes' event manager) as first mate, the wedding went extremely smoothly - and the food was delicious!
Everyone was raving in particular about the fried chicken, though there wasn't a single dish that we weren't excited to eat. A special note: when you're the bride and groom, everyone is pulling to say hello to you, or you're being pulled for photos. It was wonderful to experience the care Lisa's catering team took to make sure we got fed.
For example, when our photographer pulled us for sunset photos right when we were about to get our dinner plates, we were so excited and pleased to return to the table with full plates of food. Our wedding cake - a carrot cake - was also wonderful. We were also surprised at the end of the night to get a big bag of leftovers, which we were able to enjoy while we reminisced during our first night home. Plus, HotcCakes supplied the chairs, tablecloths, dinnerware, etc., that would've been a monster to tackle with individual vendors otherwise. All in all, we had a fantastic wedding that wouldn't have been nearly as well done without Lisa and her HotCakes team.

I really have gotten now where I pick up a dozen of the pumpkin muffins at least every couple months if not more for a small show of appreciation for a person or group. Some events they tell me they look forward to them so much they would rather have the muffins then a donation :) the hardest part about getting these for people you feel are deserving of a treat and little extra make me not want to splurge for myself and is torture until they are delivered because of the enticing smell they give off! I like many things you will find on the menu but the pumpkin muffins are my favorite thing about this place :)

Amazing desserts, especially the cheesecake because it's to die for! Every time there's a birthday, I get one of their cakes to bring to the party. The customer service here is wonderful as well. The only downside is how the pastries here are a little pricey, but otherwise it's your go-to location for desserts.

A personal favorite place to get out of the home to be productive. I've had many long study sessions with good coffee and fast reliable wifi here and I can't not mention the twice a year free lattes promotion if you're a UVA student/staff. A good place to take advantage off for a catch up with friends or just want to chill and read a book too.

Long story, but my friend took us to HotCakes to buy me a cake. HotCakes was her first suggestion of a cake shop since they provided her wedding cake; I don't believe there is any higher endorsement. I had scoped out the website ahead of time and found myself fancying a peanut butter pie which was described as "a not-too-sweet peanut butter cheesecake, with bittersweet chocolate glaze." Sold!
Once at HotCakes, I was elated to find a couple of small peanut butter pies ($20.99) in the case. They also had larger ones too. I might add that all the cakes looked incredible; I'm sure they were all delicious! Sadly, my friend would not be willing to buy me all the cakes at HotCakes. We took the cake/pie home, and everyone there went insane about the thing.
The cream cheese-based peanut butter filling and chocolate fudge-like topping were exceptional. I think we viewed dinner as a chore the next few nights, just plodding through it, wanting to get to more peanut buttery chocolate heaven! The cake/pie kept very well in the fridge for several days. It's great how HotCakes offers slices too if purchasing a whole cake isn't in the cards. I will have to grab a slice of something new next time I'm in Charlottesville!

My first experience at HotCakes was great. I was working on a project with a friend. The owner/manager offered to refill our coffee on numerous occasions. The food, while slightly overpriced, was tasty and the atmosphere inviting. The second and third experiences were far more lackluster. The second time, I came to study with a friend, and we obtained the last open table on the main side. 15 minutes into studying, a worker informed me and another table that we'd have to move to the other (less comfortable) side of the restaurant because we were studying.
He said, "There are plenty of open tables." I gathered my things, and there were no tables on that side available. Instead of complaining, we just left. We chalked it up to an odd encounter, and came back a few months later. This same event occurred. It's very rude; we bought coffee and food, like any other guest, yet they're more worried about turnover than hospitality in a town with a large college presence. I won't be coming back; better options in town. TLDR: Don't come here to study.

I've been to HotCakes a couple times just for dessert so my review will be based off that. I really enjoyed the tiramisu and cheesecake options, and their espresso drinks are really good as well! I got an iced vanilla latte! The staff are also really nice and I've never had any problems here. The one thing is that it can get pretty crowded so I wouldn't try to come here to study or anything.

Our family came in for a mid morning snack since we found them in the C'ville coupon book! We were disappointed, though. I thought that the pastries would be better and while the coffee was good, it felt overpriced. Restaurant itself is clean and nicely laid out. Wouldn't necessarily come back due to the abundance of other options at Barracks.

Awesome place in the Barracks Road Shopping Center. I stopped by here with a few friends after having lunch in the area. We got the High Hat Cupcake, Raspberry Walnut Bar, and Slice Carrot Cupcake. It was pretty busy during lunch hour and they have more than just desserts. Lots of people were there for the food, and not just sweets. I like the overall feel of the place and the fact that they have a lot of seating inside.
The server at the front counter area was super friendly and patient while we were trying to decide on our items. They also have outside seating, but on this particular day (because of the rain) the chairs and tables were not set up. Outdoor seating would be perfect on a nice day. I'd love to be able to come back and try different items on their menu, not just the desserts. I'm curious about their coffee after reading some of the other reviews. Highly Recommended!

Yum, yum, yum, yum! My friend and I stopped in here while driving through Charlottesville from a gal's weekend in WV. My friend had been in before for desserts but had never eaten a meal here and I wanted to get something fairly healthy after a weekend with the gal's in WV and figured I'd bring my fiancee back something sweet. The sweets are just inside in a display case on the right while the meal options are in a large display case just ahead.
They have a decent amount of seating inside also with wifi. They have tons of healthy options here and I was very impressed. There was a quinoa pie with squash. They had lamb and salmon sliders which my friend ordered and loved. She absolutely raved about them. They also had salads (of the healthy variety). I ended up sampling the curry chicken salad and the original chicken salad and loved them both but I ended up going with the original on their sunflower seed bread with a side of their seaweed salad. YUM.
I also ordered an iced chai which was pretty good. It was a bit weak but it wasn't terrible. My sandwich was amazing - the chicken salad was served on the AMAZING sunflower seed bread simply with lettuce and tomato and it was really really good. I love a good chicken salad and this would be on my list of tops. The gal behind the counter was really sweet.
As it was Easter Sunday they weren't especially crowded anyway - so we talked to her for a bit and asked a ton of questions about the food options behind the counter, her favorites, the tastes, etc. She didn't rush us at all, she was really friendly and sweet and answered all our questions with good humor. When we'd finished eating we went back up to order some sweets and asked a few more questions - she came over to help us again and I ended up bringing my fiancee home a slice of their salted caramel chocolate cake and a vanilla Napoleon.
I loved the shopping center this place it located in and was surprised to see all the speciality stores like Francesca's, Origins, White House Black Market, etc. in Charlottesville. I didn't realize there were so many options there --- so this place is located in a fantastic shopping area with loads of shopping and other food options. I will def. make it a point to stop in here when traveling through C-ville to head home from now on.
