The Hawthorne Hotel is Salem's favorite historic hotel, located directly in the heart of downtown Salem, MA. The founders behind the idea of the Hawthorne Hotel had embarked on a journey to build Salem's own hotel. Since the need for the Hawthorne Hotel was evident in Salem, MA in the 1920s, we've been on a beautiful and progressive journey ever since.
This journey has brought us to purchase additional property, brought us from an Inn to a Hotel, and has united us with remarkable guests. At the end of the day, the needs of our guests are of the utmost importance to us.

Established in 1925, the historic Hawthorne Hotel is situated in the heart of Salem, and a proud member of the Historic Hotels of America. To date, over 1 million guests stayed at the hotel and many generations held their weddings, anniversaries or prom parties in the Grand Ballroom. Modern Hotel for the Business TravelerFrank Poor, founder of Hygrade/ Sylvania Lighting Company was the one who first envisioned a "modern hotel for the business traveler" in Salem.Sixteen teams competed for the highest sales honor, with more than half a million dollars worth of stock in the proposed "modern hotel for Salem" being sold in a single week in 1923.
While the Hawthorne has undergone numerous redesigns since welcoming its first guests in 1925, our historic hotel has always remained faithful to its past while being mindful of the future. Guest rooms, many with views of the historic town or leafy Common, strike a balance between classic and contemporary with unfussy furnishings, blackout drapes and restful hues of white, grey and blue. Our full bedrooms are ideal for shorter stays or solo trips - compact yet comfortable with a double bed and standing shower.

Hi my name is Samantha I am a paranormal investigator. And we came to this hotel because of the rumors. On our trip to Salem we stayed at the Lizzie Borden house and came here after. So maybe this was underwhelming to me but I stayed in one of the "haunted" rooms. I personally did not experience anything but my father reports to have heard children playing in our room at night.
And a ghost dog jumping of our bed. Now I did not personally experience this but when we walked up to the 6th floor which is supposed to be the most haunted I got a really bad feeling about it and we decided to turn back. And I know that as a ghost hunter I am supposed to push past that. But take from someone who has stayed the night at the Lizzie Borden house there is something weird going on. At that hotel on the 6th floor. But room service was very good and my only complaint is that the bathroom was to small.

We had a great time in the Hawthorne. They were able to accommodate our early check-in and they were very helpful in regard to service. The ambiance is what folks say it is, and you could def feel the age in the place in a good way. We do wish our room had had a mini-refrigerator for the price we paid. There was room for one, and also, we only had one lamp in the room, and two would have been better so we didn't have to use the overhead light. All in all though, it is a great spot and we will return!

This was our first time staying here and we will definitely be back! We desperately needed to find a last minute hotel this weekend and Brynn the manager helped us with their last available room- a suite that was very well priced! We had an amazing room overlooking all of Salem, and the bed and pillows were sooo comfortable. Within walking distance from everything in downtown Salem, amazing customer service, very clean room, and amazing smelling bath products. Plus, free parking- can't beat it! We loved our stay here this weekend and will definitely be back & will be recommending to friends and family!

Highly recommend this hotel. I've never been to a place like this. At first I thought my room was small (I think they called it economy), but I loved it! Little pricey, but no complaints. I would definitely stay here again. Tyler at the front desk, as well as his staff, were top notch. They helped us with recommendations and getting places. They would remember us the next day and ask how things were with the recommendations. Nathaniel's Restaurant wasn't 100% on service on one of the two days, but I'd be back. Hotel was wonderful! Tip: Call even if it doesn't show availability. They may have some.

Sad but true. I booked a room 2 months ago and requested a favorite room was told it would cost a bit more and I paid for it. When I went to check in was given a different room, smaller and on a different floor. Had to change that room as it did not have a half bath. We went in and turned the heat down, it was warm out. We ate and came back the room was now 84, we called front desk and were told to open the windows. not the best in hospitality. I am very disappointed. I come here several times a year, will rethink my plans. I was told the manager would call.still waiting.

This is my second time staying at the Hawthorne Hotel. It's a great place to stay in Salem, with many spots of interest in a close walkable distance. (Peabody Essex Museum, the shoreline, coffee shops and restaurants, Witch Museum, Salem Witch Memorial, etc.) The rooms are clean, the in house tavern is cozy, and the staff is very friendly. My room, which I shared with a friend, was spacious with a bathroom for each of us. Very reasonable pricing for such accommodations.

I am a travel nurse currently on assignment in New Hampshire. As this was my first time this Far East, my husband and I decided to take a trip to Salem. We decided to stay here at the Hawthorn so we could take in all the local sites. We are so glad we did! Steps from the Witches museum, and small shops. The hotel itself was absolutely beautiful. The food at the bar and restaurant was fabulous. The staff, professional and accommodating. We had a fabulous stay, and have absolutely nothing negative to say. Hawthorn Hotel, you are doing it right!

Wonderfully restored hotel, very professionally operated. My only problem was with the seasonal heating/cooling set by the hotel, which gives the guest less control over AC. I tried to cool the room at night and improperly used the thermostat (in the traditional manner) and experienced overnight room temps in the mid 80s. There was a small warning message posted on the wall that I failed to see till the next day. I'm sure this is the best they can do with a historic hotel. But the hotel truly is very nice and well worth a visit.

A week ago, my husband and I celebrated our one year wedding anniversary at the Hawthorne. Check in was welcoming and informative. Our room was clean, quiet, comfortable. We settled in just fine without any problems whatsoever. Breakfast was a little confusing. The brunch menu had no breakfast options, however our server and the kitchen were very accommodating and whipped up some eggs Benedict's.
Dinner was a dream! Our server Lori made the evening so special for us. My husband surprised me with a new wedding band which she delivered to me with dessert. The food was spectacular, our table was perfectly tucked away in the back with gorgeous live piano, Lori took amazing care of us and all in all it was a perfect anniversary. We will be returning!

PROS: There were many! Food was good, staff was nice, they had amenities like a bar, ballroom, gym, restaurant, fancy lobby, free wifi, and they were located in the center of town. They also allow dogs and provide a meal plan for your breakfast. They also have two parking lots that they let you park in. CONS: They nickel and dime you when it comes to their food. They'll give you a main course but every side or topping you want is an extra dollar or so. ALSO, AND THIS ONE IS BIG.They are the first hotel I've ever been to that does not offer maid service every day.
They let them come every other day unless you request it. Meanwhile I have not seen or read anywhere that, that was the policy. OVERALL: This is definitely the best hotel to stay in. They even have two haunted rooms, experience in the movie "Bewitch", and nice rooms. Just make sure you request your room cleaned.every day

While I didn't stay in one of the fine rooms at the Hotel I did have to conduct a 2-day meeting in one of their conference rooms. As much as it's a ultra-modern world we live in, we must never, NEVER, forget that courtesy, mindfulness, and attention to detail never gets old. The Staff at The Hawthorne Hotel have taken these three pillars of hospitality and raised them to new heights. Everyone I met, from the front desk to Guest Services, were all working from the same playbook. Thanks for taking the time to be amazing!

Really nice time at this hotel. Room was spotlessly clean and well kept. A quite old hotel so bathrooms very very small. Bedding was extremely nice. Large cut out at bottom of bathroom door. curious. Can't find any reason on Google why one is needed? Weird. Still, we'd stay here again. 3 stars only because no hot water pot / coffee, tea service in the room. Plenty of room for that if they cared.

The perfect stay! We arrived & got an upgraded room for free. The location, front desk staff, food & drinks were all incredible. The hotel is old & charming - perfect for Salem & right near all the fun stuff. We're already looking to schedule another visit to Hawthorne. PS. They have the most comfortable beds ever made!

What a great hotel, perfect walking distance to everything we wanted to see. Our room was spacious and clean, yes it had a tiny bathroom, but really why complain how much time do you really spend in it. The Hotel was beautiful, old world with modern amenities. We had dinner in The Tavern, great food and drinks. The front Desk staff was very helpful in directing us to a few coffee shops. We are looking forward to our next visit.

We stayed here during the week of Halloween 2021. And they were AMAZING! I booked my original stay for 2020 back in 2019 and due to the pandemic, had to rearrange our dates. Every time I called, (multiple times to change/add dates) they were always very helpful and kind. And in person, always helpful and kind. Room was great, staff was amazing and the hotel lobby always smelled so delicious from their restaurant. I would highly recommend staying here. I have booked another stay in July 2022 and again for Halloween 2022. This will be our go to hotel from now on.

Beautiful Hotel, The room was cute and cozy. When we got there, the room was stuffy so I opened up the window in the bathroom to let in some fresh air. We saw the sites, came back ordered some room service and went to bed. In the middle of the night, I got up to use the bathroom and before I could make it out of bed the bathroom door swung open. I slowly put my feet back in bed and pulled the covers over my head.
My boyfriend thought I was nuts. He said it was from the breeze coming from the open window. Made sense to me. Except when I went to shut the window I noticed the storm window was still down. Who's nuts now? Definately will be back. The scare in the middle of the night was the cherry on top of an amazing trip to Salem.

I think the Hawthorne has a lot going for it. It's location is perfect, a cute and cozy tavern and historically it gives off both a classy and spooky vibe perfect for the area. The staff is pleasant, free parking and the entire building has a warm comfortable feel. There are a few areas lacking that i found from my visit. Although the rooms are small (which i expected from a historic hotel) there are some cleaning issues.
Upon entry i found someones dirty sock in which i had to pick up and throw out, the bathroom could have used a scrub as I found hair stuck to the wall. In the bar, I would stick to wine and beer as i didn't find any of the cocktails good (3). Also, i would caution anyone looking for a quiet stay. Again, because it's an older building it is quite loud to the point where we could almost hear a conversation. On checkout day we were woken up to a marathon outside, even at a higher level. Not sure i would recommend for a traveler looking for relaxation.

We had a very bad nights stay. This hotel is overpriced considering the poor service and amenities. The rooms are not climate controlled individually. On a chilly night we couldn't put the heat on in our room because the hotel controls the hvac centrally. As a result we were uncomfortably cold during our stay and had a bad night of sleep. When I called the front desk on our first and only night on October 11 in the late evening hours, the so called gentlemen at the desk was very rude and snapped at me and then stated "all I could do is send you blankets" then he hung up abruptly.
My first impression was "just what kind of hotel is this really we here too pay premium prices and the staff treat their guests like this?!" Our room went down to 60 degrees throughout the evening and we were so cold and uncomfortable that no amount of blankets would help. We woke up in the morning and this is the reading of the thermostat o the photo.
Not as bad but remember the temps went down during the night. We talked to the manager in the morning and she didn't offer a refund for the bad night sleep as I think should have to rectify the situation that captured our poor experience but we were lucky enough to cancel the remaining days of our reservation. We checked out the following morning.

Hi. It this is an old building. Thoughts: Bathroom is not small it was microscopic. The shower dripped all night, the first night the smoke decector was beeping every minute. We had that fixed in the morning and that was done quickly. The biggest issue I have is the temperature control. You don't get to choose if you want heat or air-conditioned in your room.
Because of the age of the hotel this is one setting for all rooms. Frozen the two mornings when waking up, and towels still wet from the day prior. Yep, we could have gotten new towels but, who wants to track that down. Staff was nice outside the restaurant. Our waitresses was super non friendly. Going to give that a pass as they looked understaffed.

This is our second stay at the Hawthorne Hotel (stayed previously September 2017 in room 528. I didn't review at that time. Staff was friendly and services efficient. We ate a dinner and a breakfast at Nathaniel's during that stay and remember enjoying both. The room was a little small and the full bathroom was also compact but it was clean, quiet (sometimes too quiet) and overlooked the common.
No activity except for the chandelier flickering once which I attributed to old hotel wiring.) Now for 2021. Salem is in indoor mask mandate mode (which is fine with us). Front desk staff still friendly. Due to the pandemic housekeeping services are on request only and the Tavern is the only restaurant available in the hotel. During our stay the Tavern staff seemed to be struggling with a new computer program so we were unable to be served on our first arrival day and service was spotty on our second day.
Our room 525 was an interior room but I knew this at booking time and that was fine. The room was large with a sofa and the smallest bathroom I've ever seen outside an airplane (not including the stand up shower). You could literally perform basic morning ablutions in one sitting, so to speak! We had quite a few laughs about this during our stay.
Certainly not a deal breaker but I will look for the words full bath the next time I book here. The Hawthorne Hotel is perfectly located to access all the attractions and the fact that everything we were doing was within walking distance is a great plus. Again the hotel is very quiet and sometimes almost eerie at night (my imagination I'm sure!)

My husband and I stayed here for one night this past weekend and had a wonderful experience! The location can't be beat - you're right next to Salem Common and very easy walking distance to all the major Salem historic attractions. We were lucky enough to be given a corner room and had an amazing view of both the park and harbor. Beds are very comfortable and although the bathroom is on the smaller end, it was fine for the two of us to share. Will definitely stay at this hotel next time we're in Salem.

As I've previously noted within my initial review, it was already mentioned and I've provided a copy of the slip showing the toilet was fixed. The issue is how long it took to be fixed, the inconvenience of having a consistently running toilet, a room with poor electrical supply, bad HVAC, overall cleanliness and the rug separation where it meets at the bathroom is lifting up visibly (tripping hazard).
By your (Claire's) response, it's evident the room was not inspected for the items mentioned above and overall customer satisfaction is not a focal point for this hotel. As this review and my email to you was an attempt to rectify the situation and provide a remedied solution, as advised by your front desk staff that would occur, I will be contacting my credit card company to assist further.

This hotel is full of history and charm! The location is perfect. We walked everywhere. The rooms and bathrooms are small but that is disclosed on the website. While we didn't experience anything "paranormal" we appreciated the architecture and ambiance of this hotel. We did arrive before check in and our room was not available for an early check in.
A staff member kindly stored our luggage for us and told us we would receive a text as soon as our room was available. We never received that text. We went back to the hotel on our on accord after 4pm. But we enjoyed Salem and our stay regardless.

When we chose the Hawthorne Hotel for our wedding it was a combination of the amazing staff we got to know at one of their open houses and the elegance of the entire venue. However, their flexibility and hospitality came through in full force when we needed to postpone over a year due to the pandemic. Working with our day-of coordinator, June, was incredible, and she was amazing at answering all our questions and helping us plan and organize a day that was perfect for us.
The serving staff were all fantastic, from the waiters / waitresses to the bartenders, and I appreciated how communicative everyone was whenever we had questions or needed to coordinate our vendors with the venue. Plus, for the price, the Hawthorne includes so many perks that other venues were trying to charge extra for. If you want a picture-perfect wedding with the best staff in historic Salem, MA, definitely book the Hawthorne today!

Visiting from California: We got a room on Expedia, and were placed on the 6th floor. This hotel is in a prime location, and if you're a tourist, you really can't get any better. We easily walked to all of the museums and attractions. I get grossed out by human hair that's not mine, and as you can see by the photos, there were far too many dark hairs in our bathroom upon check in. I've stayed at other places during Covid (albeit corporate hotels, though I prefer to frequent small ones like this one); however, the housekeeping staff needs to do better. It's visible to the eye and who knows what's on the carpet. Didn't eat at restaurant(s), but front desk staff was very friendly. Would love to have given this place 5 stars - book for the location.
